THE HISTORY OF MUSANG KING

THE HISTORY OF MUSANG KING

by Dr. Aziz Zakaria

Musang King or Raja Kunyit is now the most popular durian clone in Malaysia.

The original tree of Raja Kunyit was planted in 1794 by Chung Chun Seng who migrated from China in 1790 and settled down at Pulau Raya.

The original Raja Kunyit tree died in 1974 (age 180 yrs old).

Wee Chong Beng from Tanah Merah managed to graft Raja Kunyit and planted about 4 acres in Tanah Merah.

Wee Chong Beng registered Raja Kunyit with the Dept of Agric and given a registeration clone no. D197. In the 80's Raja Kunyit was only popular in Kelantan.

Then durian farmers in Raub, Bentong and Pulai Gua Musang started planting Raja Kunyit and renamed it as "Musang King".

Now many people are crazy about Musang King.
